Preparations are well under way for the winter season for the Samoens nannies. The snow has been falling, lift passes have been ordered and nanny insurances and first aid certificates renewed but the most important part is preparing for the fun and games we will have with your children over the next few months.

 

We are keeping our eyes open and collecting all sorts of things to help your children have a holiday to remember. Books, toys, games, paint, glitter, glue and of course the ever-trusty yoghurt pots - the list goes on and on!

WINTER IN THE ALPS

I feel very fortunate to be spending my second winter with Merinannies back in the gorgeous town of St Anton, Austria. Where for 5 months I get to wake up surrounded by the beautiful white mountains and doing the job I love!! 

This place is obviously perfect for children, playing in the snow all day, playing in the parks, being in the fresh air! Not only are there a lot of activities to do outdoors but on those real cold days where maybe we can just play for an hour outside there is still so much to do! For example, baking cakes and cookies or taking a visit to the beautiful wellness centre where they have a brilliant children's pool, outdoor pool and little waterfalls that are great fun! There is always something to do in this town for the children and parents should feel at ease whilst they have a good day skiing and maybe a bit of après.

Also staying in such a small town run by locals you get to experience all the local traditions, especially over Christmas! Krampus is something that is so well known and kids love! All the locals get together dressed as 'scary' mountain goats and spend the day in the streets play chasing the children and in the evening there is a spectacular show where they all come together and there are lots of fire works and music played! When you arrive ask your nanny or chalet/hotel hosts what is on that week!

Off to ski with young children-Travel tips

 St Anton Nanny Daisy advises....

It can be a struggle keeping children entertained at the best of times let alone on a plane! There are the obvious gadgets, like ipads but books are always great & easy too. How about a book that includes skiing, snow or the mountain environment. Get them ready and excited for where they are about to be. They could also draw a picture of what they think the ski resort will look like & even draw their nanny & say her name. This may help them when they eventually meet their special nanny for the week. Last year, I found that sticker books were extremely popular with all children too. These may be useful on the plane!

Once in the resort it is up to us to keep them occupied while you enjoy the beautiful slopes. This year I am looking forward to trying a new activity – snow painting. It involves filling up bottles with water and food colouring and then spreading it all over the snow. Then we can create pretty pictures whilst also being outside in the great alpine atmosphere. There are so many lovely things to do in the mountains as well as the expected activities. If you are going to a resort where there is a swimming pool I advise parents to bring several swim nappies. Arm bands also, however I know the pool in St.Anton provides them. 

Tips for skiing holidays with children:

·         Always have water & snacks to hand.

·         Good fitting gloves, goggles & sunglasses. If you get the children to try these things on before they go away that can be extremely useful too.

·         Gloves that can be attached together or mittens. And WATERPROOF. There is nothing worse than cold hands.

·         Clothing layers, it goes from hot to cold and vice versa very quickly.

·         The one thing to pack extra would be nappies & baby wipes – they can be very expensive in resort.

·         Transfers can be long & windy – medication for travel sick children.

·         Entertainment for the journeys!

Last week I was very lucky to experience a day’s tuition by St Anton Classic ski school

This taster session was proved to be a true breakthrough on my technique.

My instructor was incredibly helpful, friendly and focused on helping me to be a better skier. Nothing was too much trouble, efficient and keen to tailor to my needs. Brilliant! I've been having lessons with many ski schools for years, but this time I felt that I have learnt something new.
Quality tuition makes a refreshing change and combined with a skilfully humorous delivery made the day a great success. Hope to get more out of this superb school and try their famous powder days without fear.

What makes the school different is their authenticity and long standing local expertise.

These guys know the mountain well and they can take you to the best snow conditions in the entire Arlberg area, quiet slopes and the best restaurant huts.

Love's in the air

The snow is falling in the Alps and the conditions are superb!
With half term and Valentines Day around the corner we get the need to express our love for craftwork with the children: Our nannies have been shopping for more glue, sequins, paints and glitter they are fully prepared to get messy and creative.

The Ski Show in St Anton runs every Wednesday night from 8pm and Thursday night is an après-ski night not be missed.

We had a fantastic holiday and Emily was excellent; she was punctual, smiling, was very confident in dealing with two active toddlers and planned several activities a day for the boys. My sister and I both agreed that Emily was the best Alps based nanny we have had.

January is over and the snow superb!

January is almost over and half term is round the corner, snow conditions are superb now and most of our childcare places are full. This includes February half term but we still have available nannies for Easter in some of our ski resorts in France and Austria.

Last week was great fun in St Anton.

 Nannies, kids and parents had a fantastic time in the snow , the chalets , swimming pools, town strolls and of course après ski in its highest too (for the mummies and daddies)!!!

When the sun was out Nicola and Sarah took the kids up in the gondola to play on the mountain, meet the parents and have lunch...then the mummies and daddies could carry on enjoying their skiing....

Followed by a train ride back to the chalet was a fabulous end of the day.
